Pattern making

Duration: 4 sessions (132 hours)
Prerequisite: Knowledge of basic sewing (Beginner Sewing)

Upon completing this program, students will be able to design the pattern of any garment idea, picture or design in any personal measurements or according to standard sizes and be able to grade patterns in any sizes.

Session 1

  1. Method for taking body measurements.
  2. Drafting basic blocks bodice, skirt, sleeve and how to match them.
  3. Intro to flat patternmaking: working patterns, flat patternmaking method and principles, process and analysis
  4. Dart manipulation and transfers.
  5. All styles of skirt developments
  6. Creating your own skirt design.
  7. Pattern drafting of original skirt.

Supplies:

  • Half scale L square ruler
  • French curve
  • Grid ruler
  • Roll of pattern paper
  • Cardboard
  • Detachable tape
  • Mechanical pencil
  • Sewing supplies: scissors, pins, needles, thread, measuring tape

Session 2

  1. Personal full size blocks Corsage, skirt and sleeves. Full size dress blocks.
  2. Pleats and slits
  3. Pattern drafting of intricate skirt designs
  4. Pattern drafting of dresses designs
  5. Pattern drafting of all types of sleeves
  6. Creating your own dress design with sleeves.
  7. Pattern drafting and development of a full scale original dress design with all the detail requirements and information, matching technique, to obtain a perfectly matching pattern. Muslin fitting. Rectification to the pattern

Session 3

  1. Measurement technique for pants (bring leggings)
  2. Making pants blocks (full size blocks) Matching technique
  3. Pattern drafting and developments of different styles of pants, shorts.
  4. Muslin fitting of pants and how to bring rectifications to the pattern.
  5. Introduction to collars and styles of collars.
  6. Pattern drafting and developments of all styles of collars. Matching technique with variety of necklines.
  7. Introduction to blouses and shirts.
  8. Pattern drafting of different styles of blouses and shirts including facings, bands, yokes, pleats, tucks and sleeve cuffs. Muslin fitting and rectification.
  9. Pattern drafting and development of different style of jackets – and adapting different styles of collars. Muslin fitting and rectification.

Session 4

  1. Pattern drafting and development of different styles of coats and adapting different styles of collars.
  2. Introduction to different styles of capes and hoods
  3. Making cape block with or without hood.
  4. Pattern drafting and development of an A line cape with hood.
  5. Drafting jumpsuit block adding ease.
  6. Grading technique for all sizes.
  7. Introduction to knits and stretch fabric.
  8. Taking measurements, application of measurements according to degree of stretch in the fabric.
  9. Original design of your choice. Pattern development. Muslin fitting and rectification to the pattern.
